The Constellations Pocket Guide

This 308-page guide is available in two formats: the traditional ‘desk’ copy (above left), and the ‘field edition’ [field guide] (above, right) perfect for taking outside.

The guide is ideal for anyone with an interest in the night skies.

Beginners will find it an entertaining way to learn about the myths and the facts about each of the 88 constellations.

Amateur astronomers will find details on many binaries and other stars worthy of investigation.

We are very proud that thousands of copies of The Constellations Pocket Guide have been sent all over the world in the last few years. In fact, we believe that The Constellations Pocket Guide is the best selling astronomy guide only available on the Internet.

  • The ‘pocket guide’ is “perfect bound”, using the best quality glues.

  • The ‘field guide’ is spiral bound, which means it lies flat, freeing the hands for scopes and binoculars.

  • Both versions are professionally printed at 1200 dpi and measure a handy 4.3" x 6.5" (11.0 x 16.4 cm).

Both versions have the same content, and the same type of laminated white cover.

  • American and other international customers may charge their order with American Express, Visa or Mastercard, or send a postal money order.

  • For our American and other international customers, cheques are not encouraged. However if you do choose to send a personal cheque be aware that it will take four weeks to clear, delaying the filling of your order a similar length of time.

  • Barring unusual weather or similar natural event, we promise that any order received before 2 p.m. EST (weekdays) will be shipped the same day.

Features (the guides are identical except for the type of binding):

    1. The Transition Date is adjusted for local Savings Time, so it should be accurate all year round.

(The transition date is the day of the year that
the given star will be due south at midnight.)

Also the transition date is given for a specific star for each constellation (e.g. alpha And, delta Cnc).

    2. Stars recently discovered to have their own planets are included, with the planets' properties. Examples are 47 UMa and 70 Virginis.

    3. The "Index of Other Deep Sky Objects" and the "Messier Index" offer quick references of the best deep sky objects listed in The Constellations Pocket Guide.

    4. The "Variable Star List" gives dates of expected maxima forsignificant variable stars.

    5. The "proper names" of 70 major stars are included in a convenient reference, arranged alphabetically. Examples are Altair (alpha Aquilae), Betelgeuse (alpha Ori), and Schedar (alpha Cas).

    6. The guide's graphics are identical to those on the web site, white stars on a black sky:

Below the graph you'll find information on the most important stars: the location (RA, Dec), distance in light years, visual magnitude, and star name - if any.
Several handy reference pages and a few introductory pages are included, for those just beginning their study of astronomy:

      1. A list of all constellations is given, as well as their Latin genitive (the form used with stars, i.e., alpha Orionis).

      2. The Greek alphabet table, as found on my web site, is replicated in the guide.

      3. First time users will appreciate the instructions on how to use the graphics to find their way around the night skies.

      4. Guide-users are shown how to calculate where any star will rise on the horizon at their particular location. (It really isn't difficult!).
